NEWS
The Australia Renewable Energy Association (AREA) is pleased to highlight a significant milestone in Australia’s clean energy transition. Green Gold Energy (GGE), a leading renewable energy developer based in Adelaide, has received approval for a major solar and battery energy storage project that will enhance South Australia’s renewable energy capacity and grid stability.
A Landmark Project for South Australia
The Australia Plains Solar Farm and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has been granted development approval by the South Australian government. The project will feature a 200 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) installation combined with a 200 MW / 400 MWh BESS, ensuring a steady and reliable supply of renewable energy.
Strategic Location & Grid Integration
The project will be developed on a 325-hectare site near Robertstown, approximately 130 km northeast of Adelaide. It will be directly connected to the Robertstown substation, a critical hub in the EnergyConnect interconnection project, which links the electricity networks of South Australia, New South Wales, and Victoria. This integration will bolster cross-state energy reliability and support South Australia’s ambitious renewable energy goals.
Driving Australia’s Clean Energy Future
Once operational, the solar farm is expected to generate 415,000 MWh of electricity annually, providing clean energy to thousands of households and businesses. Additionally, the inclusion of large-scale battery storage will help manage energy supply fluctuations, ensuring grid stability even when solar generation is low.
Commitment to Sustainability & Economic Growth
Beyond environmental benefits, the project will drive economic growth by creating local job opportunities throughout the construction and operational phases. With construction set to begin later this year and expected to take 18 months, the project underscores South Australia’s role as a leader in the renewable energy transition.
AREA’s Perspective
At AREA, we recognize the significance of integrating large-scale renewable projects with storage solutions to address the intermittency challenges of clean energy. The approval of this project is a testament to Australia’s commitment to achieving its net-zero targets and ensuring a sustainable energy future.
We look forward to seeing the positive impact of the Australia Plains Solar Farm and BESS and will continue to support initiatives that drive innovation, sustainability, and energy security in Australia.
